Rosamunde Wood is originally from Derbyshire but has lived in Buckinghamshire for over 40 years after coming to work at The Open University. After leaving school she attended a Vocational Graphics course at Derby College of Art, and then transferred to Coventry Art College and gained a BA(Hons) in Graphic Design. A year at Bristol University for a Cert Ed followed. Before joining the Open University, Ros worked for a short while as a freelance illustrator for magazines, via a London agent. Ros also taught Art at local evening classes for several years in the late 1970s.
Ros joined the OU as a Graphic Designer but soon moved into Design Management. Art took a back seat during her 22 OU years, but Ros started painting her own cats in 2009 – although she’s always drawn ever since she could hold a pencil! Ros has sold through a London gallery, had work published as a freelance illustrator and sold internationally. She has also exhibited both in London and at various exhibitions. Ros has undertaken many commissions – usually pet portraits – initially executed using pastels on velour, more recently in oils.
Ros has worked in most mediums, most recently embracing oils. She benefited greatly from the tuition in oil painting from Martin Kinnear and his weekly online sessions. They helped keep Ros sane and occupied during the Covid lockdowns and she discovered many great artists – and their artwork and methods – during these sessions. See some of what she has produced in her “Studies” gallery. Ros was then able to take elements of their methods into her own artwork and she continues to study through Martin Kinnear’s Advanced Oils course.
Through working with oils, Ros has also developed a looser style and broadened her subject matter to include landscapes and seascapes. Whilst she may not have a single artistic “style”, composition and balance have always had a strong presence in her work.
